The Seven Paths: Changing One's Way of Walking in the World, by Anasazi Foundation

Discover the Healing Power of the Wilderness

People have moved away from Mother Earth, bringing heartache, pain, and other maladies of the modern age. The “self-help” movement claims to offer peace and fulfillment to individuals, but this solitary approach takes us only so far. Ultimately, it is in communion with our fellow beings and the natural world that we are made whole. We need to leave the path of Me and follow the path of We.

This poetic, evocative story presents the meditations of an ancient Anasazi tribesman who rejects his family and sets off on a journey through the desert. He walks seven paths, each teaching a lesson symbolized by an element of the natural world: light, wind, water, stone, plants, animals, and, finally, the unity of all beings with the Creator. The Seven Paths reveals a source of wisdom, restoration, and renewal familiar to native people but lost to the rest of us, seven elements among nature that combine to mend human hearts.

Review
“In The Seven Paths ANASAZI Foundation offers a collection of profound and deep advice and wisdom reminiscent of The Prophet and The Alchemist. The wisdom of connecting to Mother Earth with others under the eyes of the Creator is the greatest wisdom of all.”
—Les Stroud, creator of Discovery Channel’s Survivorman and Beyond Survival and bestselling author of Survive! and Will to Live

“Inspiring! The Seven Paths is filled with wisdom and truth—it is the perfect prescription for healing a broken heart.”
—Wynonna Judd

“The Seven Paths captures with clarity the simple and profound truths too often lost in life’s complexities.”
—Richard Paul Evans, #1 New York Times bestselling author of more than twenty-five books

“There is much to learn from any person who has lived his life trying to heed the wisdom he has gathered from the lingering voices of his ancestors—especially in an age, like our own, when those voices have been spurned. Ezekiel Sanchez (Good Buffalo Eagle), cofounder of ANASAZI Foundation, is such a person. He has used the ancient, tested wisdom of his people to touch the souls of thousands of once-troubled young people and their families and show them the way to reunion and peace. Such a person also is his literary collaborator, Jim Ferrell. In The Seven Paths, they have distilled their unique and luminous insight. Reading this book receptively, you will likely catch yourself already forward walking in your heart and awakening to the light.”
—C. Terry Warner, founder, The Arbinger Institute

“This book is profound! The principle of ‘We’ is the secret to every success on and off the field.”
—Steve Young, NFL Hall of Fame quarterback and ESPN commentator

“Through the story of the Seven Paths, my daughter realized how she, too, had walked backward, away from her family. This profound discovery saved my daughter’s life, which in turn saved our entire family. It gave her a solid foundation to navigate through her very difficult teenage years...it gave our lost child new feet to find her way—her path to becoming a loving, successful young adult with truly a heart at peace.”
—Elaine Taylor, President, The Taylor Family Foundation

“Speaking with the wisdom of ancient ones, this guide to life’s challenging journey is brilliantly accessible and spiritually transforming.”
—Richard Ferre, MD, adolescent and adult psychiatrist

“The Seven Paths lays the groundwork for personal growth, insights, and strength required in long-term recovery.”
—Jon Memmott, retired judge

“Every page is filled with insight and wisdom. You will want to read it, share it, and read it again.”
—Dale Tingey, PhD, founder and Executive Director, American Indian Services

“The Seven Paths epitomizes the strength of one of my favorite words: TEAM—Together Everyone Achieves More.”
—Bart Starr, NFL Hall of Fame quarterback

“In the universal moments of feeling stuck or lost, the Seven Paths are simple and profound truths that provide not only solace but genuine ways to change your heart.”
—Courtney Merrill, marriage and family therapist and educational consultant

“ANASAZI Foundation’s Seven Paths illustrates an oft-forgotten truth that it is not our experiences that determine the quality of our lives but who we are morally when we pass through those experiences. To walk in the light instead of in darkness means we see our experiences truthfully and learn and grow. When we betray the light within us, we walk in darkness and we find our experiences burdensome. This book is an invitation to all to live truthfully and distinguish toxic from nourishing ways of being in the world.”
—Terrance D. Olson, PhD, Ernest Osborne award winner in Family Life Education

“The Seven Paths is truly a blessing. I recommend it to anyone in need of healing, wisdom, power, and goodness.”
—Stan Block, MD, author and founder, Mind-Body Bridging

“A little book with a big message! The Seven Paths reminds us of who we are, our relationship to our Creator, and how happiness with our families is within our grasp.”
—Danny Ainge, former professional basketball and baseball player and President of Basketball Operations, Boston Celtics

“It is a privilege to recommend The Seven Paths. ANASAZI is one of the best programs for helping young people and adults make major changes in their lives, and I am thrilled this book will make the philosophy and wisdom their program is based on accessible to a larger audience.”
—Ralph H. Earle, MDiv, PhD, founder and President, Psychological Counseling Services, Ltd.

The Seven Paths - What Nature can Teach us
By N. Gustafson
I got a bit of an early exposure to this book, as I was a TrailWalker with the Anasazi Foundation this past year. That is, I worked in their Wilderness Therapy program and spent many weeks hiking through the depths of the wilderness with YoungWalkers - the youth who were admitted to the program. This is the book that we would gift to incoming YoungWalkers, and get to carry and read ourselves as well. I can say undoubtedly that it carried a distinct power to invite both YoungWalkers and TrailWalkers towards positive change. The context of the wilderness certainly helped, but critically, the change counted as we applied it upon returning home.

The story within is that of a man who leaves his people, and his subsequent reflections on the way of Nature around him. Through the examples he sees, he gains clarity and truth, and perhaps most importantly is able to reflect on his own heart - The factor he has control over, and in fact the only thing that, in the end, does turn him back to his people.

In my experience with it, The Seven Paths has a combination of:

Simplicity - Really, no more words than are needed are used. It is a short book, because it is filtered, condensed, and purified.
Significance - In so many ways it is our own story - The story of where our heart steps and falters, and can again return.
Invitation - By example, and not by force or a checklist, the reader is invited to reflect on their experience in the world.

The Reflection aspect is really what made this book carry for me. I would say this definitely ISN'T a book you simply read to whittle away time - There are thousands of other books for that. This is a book that you take in pieces, and give time to ponder upon each piece as you go about your day.

I had the opportunity to be walking through the wilderness as I read The Seven Paths, and I saw corresponding experiences in my life as I read - I depended each day on fresh water for life, on light of fire or sun for guidance and warmth, on stone for solid footing, on plants for materials, and on animals for a connection to the life around us that perfectly followed a natural way.

The connections didn't end there, though - with time to ponder, I realized that the light of sun and fire was, in my life, like the sources I have of truth in daily life, and a reminder that without taking time to reconnect to those pieces, my life would wander, literally, in darkness. What 'stones' I chose to rely upon in daily life might overturn like those unstable ones I'd slipped on while hiking, and choosing good principles/friends/books/etc. to rely upon would simply give the 'step' of my life so much more force.

It's difficult to compare this book to other texts, partly because the atmosphere it takes is less mechanical, less clinical, less deterministic than most any other books that speak of 'Changing One's Way'. It instead invites the reader to look within, to check where their heart is, and to adjust the Walking of their life in such a way that they can Walk Forward to where they want to be.

Don't expect a clinical, Western approach defining precisely what you're doing wrong and what you need to stop/start to fix it.

Do expect a powerful example and invitation to broaden your life and reach more deeply inside yourself, to take better notice of who you are, and to be able to invite others to do the same.

I would personally recommend, the next time you can swing a few days' camping trip, bring this book along. Read it away from the noise of the world.

And until that camping trip, read it at home and see what pieces work their way into your pondering, and what pieces you work into the 'Walking' of your life.

The Ultimate "Self-Help" Book
By Seth Adam Smith
Since reading "The Seven Paths," my life has completely changed. Looking back, I can actually distinguish a clear demarkation line between living for myself and trying to live for others. My life before was a desert wasteland of selfishness. But my life after reading "The Seven Paths," and living its principles, has been an oasis of peace and community. Of course, life has had its ups and downs, but I don't lose sight of what is important: living the path of WE.

It's no small thing to claim that living the principles found in "The Seven Paths" have brought me more joy than any other self-help book, but I claim it. In my opinion, "The Seven Paths" is the ULTIMATE self-help book because it encourages the reader to leave the path of ME and live the path of WE. "Finding ourselves" and "helping ourselves" means that we lose ourselves and forget ourselves in the service of others. "The Seven Paths" taught me that--for which I will be eternally grateful.

Simple and profound
By Jacob Sanchez
I read the Seven Paths of the Anasazi Way while walking in the desert of Arizona. Like the narrator, I too had been separated from my people and myself. What I mean by this is I didn't have the connection or relationship I wanted with my family, especially my father. Reading this book helped me to gain perspective of my part in these relationships. The simplicity of the illustrations resonated and have stayed with me. Yet, the depth of the principles have me returning to the book often. This is a book I will and do recommend with confidence.
