My gunsteling Boereoorlogroman sedert Magersfontein

Sonja Loots se Sirkusboere is een van die mees opwindende Afrikaanse (en Suid-Afrikaanse) romans van die laaste klompie jare. Selfs al is historiese romans nie jou ding nie, gee hierdie een 'n kans. Dit is slim, verrassend, ontroerend, en by tye baie snaaks ook. Loots se karakters ruik na sweet en tabak; en haar onverbiddelike (en welkome) uitbeelding van hulle rassisme en doodgewone kleinsieligheid word deurentyd gebalanseer deur 'n werklike deernis met die menslikheid van die karakters. Loots bewerkstellig 'n fassinerende perspektief, nie net op 'n bepaalde stel historiese gebeure nie, maar op ons verhouding met die historiese as sodanig. Dit is my gunsteling 'Boereoorlogroman' sedert Etienne Leroux se Magersfontein, O Magersfontein.
