Intriguing World of How
By Mater lady
There are lives that are lived quietly and kindly. There are those whose lives are neither. Sometimes people are victims through no faults of their own. There are others who perpetrate harm and death. This book covers those and more. From the first, I was hooked into the world of victims and those who victimize. So get out the pitchers of iced tea, lemonade or stronger stuff, turn the air conditioner on full blast and sink into the Lazy Boy to read this fascinating book. After the poignant Foreword on how this book and the previous ones by the author came about, each story is prefaced by Julie Coley in a quiet tone, cleverly questioning the "how" of the story to come.
How can someone commit such heinous acts? How can several criminals plot and carry out gruesome and greedy deeds? How can twisted reasoning be resolved in a trial? How can some even escape punishment? How do survivors continue their lives. Julie addresses these graphically and realistically, always drawing the reader into those environs of the mind.
As these intriguing stories progressed through the decades, I was drawn into those minds and deeds. Julie sets the scenes, the times and their stresses and before you know it, YOU are there and YOU are witnesses of these crimes and their aftermath. The shockers keep coming. There are pictures of the victims, the perpetrators and the gravestones at the end of each story. Articles and references bring out the accuracies of Julie's careful research. The last two stories in particular were haunting in their settings and circumstances. The impact on me brought my own memories of growing up in Wichita Falls and the names of those involved were familiar to me. Some of the other stories brought up familiar street names in more than one town, and again I knew members of some of those mentioned, knew and went to school with some of their children and additionally, I had heard some of those stories from my Dad who was a lawyer and worked in the County Clerk's office in Wichita Falls.
What a legacy Julie Coley has give us with this 200 plus page book. I highly recommend this and the previous books Julie has written. You won't be disappointed.

How Did They Die?
By pamash
Interesting information. Lot of hard and extensive research obviously went into the collection of the data. Hard to read because it is written by an "interested" author not an "experienced" author. I wonder who the editor was.

Attention History lovers! I could hardly put this book down!
By HonestConsumer
An easy read for anyone, especially history lovers! These stories are short and to-the-point (which is important for me because we keep a very tight schedule at our house). More importantly, the stories are fascinating! My ancestors came from Electra and as a child I used to walk the streets of Electra, past the theatre and library, along Main St, over to Dairy Queen and back to my grandma's house - when I read these stories it was like I was there again. I felt the jealousy of the husbands and wives, the anger of betrayal, the tenacious spirit of law enforcement not giving up, the tension of court room drama, the passion behind a parent protecting their child. You can tell the author poured her heart and soul into this research and compilation. At the end of each story, there is a very short genealogy of the characters as well as sources (such as SSDI). Thorough, fascinating, intense and sometimes funny. Enjoy this easy read!
