Seriously have never disliked a "heroine" in a story as much as I ...

Seriously have never disliked a "heroine" in a story as much as I disliked this one. Just completely selfish, self absorbed, woe is me...she was awful. The overall story could have held up if she wasn't such a terrible character. One of the few books that I've ever read where the main character didn't even redeem them self by the end of the story. Ugh :(

A wonderful debut novel!

Hard is the debut novel for author Sosie Frost, and wow, what an achievement! This is a well-written, smooth-flowing, steamy romance featuring a gorgeous, solid, tattooed, scarred, hunky as hell, ex- Navy SEAL who was injured in combat by an IED named Zach, and his equally stunning, sweet, kind-hearted, generous stepsister, Shay. I’ll try not to give too many spoilers.

The book begins in a bar, where Shay is drowning her sorrows; her father and his prospective bride were killed in a car crash, so their wedding has now turned into a funeral. I have to admit that, while it’s not really funny in real life, the funeral/wedding scenes were a bit funny: the recycled wedding cake, people leaving wedding gifts at the coffin during the wake, the flower girls running amok around the coffin...but I digress.
While drinking away her sorrow, Shay meets Zach, who, like I mentioned before, is a hunky, hot man. He makes passes at her, she rebuffs, but eventually one thing leads to another, and the first chapters of the book are hot, hot, hot!

The problem comes afterward, when Shay learns that Zach is her stepbrother. Oh, no, he didn’t! Yup, he did! He knew the whole time. Shame on you, Zach! So, things happen, Shay and Zach learn some interesting things at the reading of the will, and things heat up (not in a good way).
I won’t spoil the book for you, so you will have to read this for yourself to see what happens, but this book is well worth the read. I loved the way the story and their relationship developed; I loved Zach so much... he was so determined to win Shay’s heart, and you’ve gotta love a man who is so into a woman.

Dangerous things are going on with Zach, and you will need to read the book to see what I mean, but I’m glad for the ending of the book. The ending was so awesome, and I think Sosie did an amazing job!

I’d give this a solid 4.5-5 stars.

Hard to Forget. Loved the Intensity

This book starts out with such passion, fire and with a hidden agenda. Loved it. What more can you ask for between step siblings. Shay is fixing to burying her father and was going thru the mourning of a man she really wasn’t able to know and runs into a handsome man at a bar, named Zach” Hard” Harden. One thing leads to another and they had an intense night of passion to which she loved. She wished she had gotten the SEAL’s phone number but with everything going on, she just figured it was for the best. Later after the funeral, she goes to see her father’s lawyer and who should she see there? Zach…and she finds out he is her new step brother. Boy is she highly upset yet still attracted to him. When she finds out that her dad left the estate to both of them, she is so upset because it should be to her, not him. She is completely hurt and angry that Zach is left half when he didn’t know her father at long while she didn’t get to know him any.
Zach knew when he saw her who she was but she completely entranced him. He wanted her and he had gone thru some horrible times overseas. He had been badly injured and he was back home trying to recover when his mom and new stepdad had been killed. Zach is this sweet, alpha male who sees the woman of his dreams and he knew what would happen when he seduced her and she found out who he was to her but he took the risk. Well, Shay sure was mad but Zach still continued to pursue his woman. At times he was cocksure with her while Shay has a lifetime of hurt bottled up inside due to how she was raised. The two come together and the story takes a complex turn of events with passion and emotions that raise this from a general stepbrother story to a beautiful, complex story full of emotions that is great and I loved it. I loved the outcome and hope to read more from this author.

There is a special value in "Sentimental Education" that puts it among the highest class of novels. Better than Thackery, better than Stendhal, better than Austen, better than Balzac, better than Eliot, it offers something that Dickens or Melville, for all their virtues, do not provide. Here is a portrayal of a society, where the author looks deeply and thoroughly--and does not flinch. The contrast with Thackeray, whose sarcasms and coldness cannot hide a fundamentally conventional mind, is obvious. But there is also not the self-satisfied amusement with its own proprieties that we see in Austen, or the something for everyone that we see in Trollope, or the sentimentality so obvious in Dickens, or the way the captain goes on and on in "Billy Budd" saying he has no choice but to execute the fundamentally innocent Billy, or the fundamentally abstract obsession with unity that we see in Eliot. Here we see a story of a venial, petty monarchy, the hopes and illusions of the second republic, and its suppression and replacement by a new Napoleonic regime. If many of the friends of Frederic Moreau are shallow and complacent in their "democratic" phase, that does not alter their fact that their opportunism and moral corruption is a gruesome business. It does not remove the shock on reading the death of the one truly decent person in the book, murdered by a dead ringer for David Horowitz.

This is not a popular book in the English speaking world. Frederic Moreau does not have the dignity and moral weight that a moralistic criticism demands. Much of his time is spent wondering how to seduce Madame Arnoux or how he should snag "The General." Of course, French 19th century fiction is distinguished from its Victorian counterpart by a greater degree of sexual realism. But the point of the book is not to discuss Moreau's apparently aimless life. Instead the point is how there are alternatives that would give his life meaning, whether it be love, artistic creation, professional achievement, politics and a genuine interest in civil society. Moreau fails to achieve some of these because he does not have the energy to get them, he fails to achieve others because he runs out of time, he fails others because he is betrayed by people he trusts, and he fails others because otherwhelming forces remove options from the tables. Moreau does not fail simply because he is weak, he fails for reasons that most people fail. And in that sense Flaubert shows an exemplary realism.

And of course, Flaubert is the master stylist. Who can forget his description of the wealthy opportunist Dambeuse "worshipping Authority so fevrently he would have paid for the privilege of selling himself." There is the perfectly controlled realism: we do not have the cheap tricks and garish effects of middlebrow writers. But we still have the poetic and the imaginiative: "the smoke of a railway engine stretched out in a horizontal line, like a gigantic ostrich feather who tip kept blowing away," "The women wore brightly coloured dresses with long waists, and, sitting on the tiered seats in the stands, they looked like great banks of flowers, flecked with black here and there by the dark clothes of the men." "the warm breeze from the plains brought whiffs of lavender together with the smell of tar from a boat behind the lock." Moreau's passion for Madame Arnoux may be weak, but it is more real and more convincing than all but a handful of romances in 19th century fiction. The political scenes present a picture that has almost no equals: a left chattering fashionable platitudes, but with a leaven of genuine indignation, a right who covers itself in hypocrisy and lies until it can find the moment to strike. And of course there is the ending, a discussion of nostalgia and lost hopes that many English critics find sordid, but is one of the most heartbreaking in all fiction.

There is a complaint among people who should know better, like Peter Gay and James Wood, that Flaubert shows a certain unnecessary bitterness. This shows a certain ignorance of history. After all Flaubert wrote one of the great novels in world literature and instead of being praised by his own government he was put on trial for obscenity. His contempt did not come lightly. One could contrast it with Naipaul's, whose solution to the mediocrities of Trinidad was to move to a very different country and to be generously praised, by some for his art, and by others for appeasing conservative consciences. Certainly Naipaul's path is not an alternative available to most of his countrymen. Nor was Flaubert's distaste for contemporary life simply the result of the particular nastiness only confined to French politics. There were things equally vile or worse in Trollope's Ireland or in the end of Reconstruction of Henry James. That they did not perceive the same kind of foulness surely is a mark on the limits of their imagination, and a point in Flaubert's favor. Sentimentality is often described as unearned emotion. But in Sentimental Education, every emotion is well deserved.

Less perfect than Madame Bovary, yet even more magnificent. Though flawed, Penguin's edition is the best available.

As none of Flaubert's other works are as widely known as Madame Bovary, I assumed they must be inferior, and did not rush to read them. When I finally started reading Sentimental Education, I was immediately struck by its relative lack of refinement, and I almost put it down. I am quite glad I did not: it has become my favorite literary work of all time.

Unfortunately, there isn't a single adjective I can use to describe its magnificence, and I certainly would not say it is "greater" than Madame Bovary. It takes minimal interest in doing the things that are generally considered important; for example, there is not a single articulable "idea" presented in the novel. The action reaches a climax near the end, but it is rather arbitrary, and even feels forced. There is a central metaphor, I suppose, but not the sort of puzzle-piece metaphor one would find in Tolstoy's work.

And yet, I feel the rejection of the conventions of "great" literature are greatly to Flaubert's credit. In Sentimental Education, Flaubert directly accomplishes those things that literary conventions were developed to accomplish. To provide an incomplete list of those things, he establishes an intimate and emotional connection with the reader, illustrates a number of the fundamental properties of the world we live in, and provides that aesthetic bliss found only in masterful art.

As further evidence of this novel's awesomeness that I couldn't fit into a properly organized paragraph, this is the only book I've ever had dreams about, and indeed I continue to have dreams about it. According to the introduction, Kafka also had dreams about it.

REGARDING THE Penguin Classics EDITION SPECIFICALLY:
There are a few stray stupidities with this edition, but I think it is probably the best available. I compared portions of the translation to the original French, and it is certainly more faithful than the Oxford edition. The chapter-by-chapter timeline and the corresponding historical timeline are very useful and efficient. The introduction is interesting and relevant, and even contains a polite spoiler warning.

My biggest objection is the glaring abridgment of the novel's title. The full title is "L'Education Sentimentale: Histoire d'un Jeune Homme." The latter portion of the title comes into play when, on page 192, a character makes direct allusion to it, saying that he will "write a little novel entitled A History of the Idea of Justice." Readers of the Penguin edition are at risk of entirely missing this allusion.

Another objection is that no character list is presented, as the characters are introduced confusingly and and so great in number that, if the reader isn't keeping a list him/herself, he/she will entirely lose track of them. Finally, there are a few words that are not translated, and no note is given on their meaning. Some are used commonly by English speakers, but one or two I was never able to figure out the meaning of.

That said, this novel is highly recommended, and the Penguin edition is the best available.

Give me more of that Sentimental learning

I agree with a reviewer before me that this masterpiece is overshadowed by Bovary and, for the life of me, I can't understand why. The main character is better, Emma Bovary's complaints do little to outshine Frederic Moreau's idle lifestyle. It's wonderful--the language, the descriptions and, most of all, the way in which Flaubert can make the reader see how utterly wretched the "upper class" lifestyle is. Excellent, from beginning to end.

Very informative but not sure using multiple writers works

This was used as a textbook in my Japanese History class and, though there is a lot of great information in the book, it isn't as linear as an actual textbook. It is a book of essays written by different people so there was really no effort to make sure people and events were only talked about once like a normal history textbook. This redundancy means the reader has to skip and mentally delete a lot of repetitive information which can lead to a difficult and confusing read and hence a harder time retaining what you need to know for an exam.

A classic comparative study of medicine and national culture, Medicine and Culture shows us that while doctors regard themselves as servants of science, they are often prisoners of custom. The United States, England, Germany, and France have equivalent life expectancy rates, yet medical treatment differs enormously from country to country. A new foreword by the author examines the trend toward evidence-based medicine and addresses the substantial changes in medical culture since 1988, including the proliferation of alternative medicine and the changing face of medicine in the European Community since the fall of Communism.

About the Author

Lynn Payer, a former editor for the New York Times Good Health magazine, writes extensively about medical issues for doctors as well as for the general public. She lives in New York City.

A fascinating anthropology of European and American medicine

While we may be used to looking at the anthropology of less developed countries, Lynn Payer turns her lens at European and American medicine. In England one keeps a stiff upper lip, as doctors give fewer tests, less medicine and lower doses, even when not rationed. West Germans use six times the number of heart drugs as the French or English, although the three countries have similar rates of heart disease, often using several at once due to the attitudes towards the heart. France looks more at the terrain than the pathological organisms attacking it, strengthening the immunological system with techniques Americans would consider fringe medicine. And French doctors would use a hysterosalpingogram instead of the D&C that German, English and Americans use to diagnose conditions because they are afraid of adhesions from surgery that might impair fertility. American doctors do excessive hysterectomies that would be considered unwarranted in England, France and Germany and, at least at the time of the book, radical mastectomies instead of lumpectomies.

The book also looks at how medical compensation affects the way medicine is practiced. German and American doctors who are paid fees for each procedure use far more than English doctors who are paid a straight salary. American doctors may raise their fees when they want more compensation while French doctors would need to perform more operations. American doctors whose insurance companies would require them to perform a cesarean section after fibroid removal are more prone to remove the uterus than French doctors who have no such pressure and feel that a woman could have six myomectomies before a C-section would be required.

And different organs are looked at as important. The French place great stress on the liver, its ability to process food and to regulate the body while the Germans focus on the heart.

While we may consider medicine a science apart from cultural considerations, Payer shows us that the art of medicine is subject to cultural and economic biases even in the modern European-American context.

quite good, but a bit old info

Having experienced medical care in five different countries, according to my experience varieties in treatment in different countries are very common. Though former British colonies still retain lots of resemblance to British health system. My only objection to the book is that it needs an update - lumpectomies instead of radical mastectomies are getting more common in US. However, hysterectomy, often unjustified, is still far to common in US with no hope for change in near future. Also, doctors seem to be unable to understand that different countries have different disease statistics even after you bring them articles printed in medical journals proving that you are right. Medicine does not deserve to be called science, IMO.

The spirit of medicine comes from culture

In Medicine and Culture, Payer describes what she sees as the spirit of the medical system in France, Germany, England, and the US. I say spirit, because she writes about the feel she got for the medical system in each while doing business and living abroad. She doesn't detail how the medicine is financed and regulated, and statistics are presented sparsely to illustrate points, and not flung at the reader. She is very much writing about the feel of medicine and how it interacts with culture in each country. This makes the subject matter less dated, because culture changes slowly, unlike specific medical procedures or government regulations.

I read this a few years ago and I feel that it has given me some important perspective and insight into medicine, which helps me interpret other information that I get about medicine. It was a fast read and worthwhile, even if you came across the book while looking for a more concrete treatment of medicine in different countries.
