Something of a Struggle to Read (Literally) ...

As I read this text, I was impressed by the structure. Each new chapter has its own table of contents. This makes locating information exceptionally easy. I marveled at why more academic/technical texts do not implement this. Likewise, the study questions at the end of each chapter are of genuine value (and not simply some "busy-work" one might receive in a college classroom).

The text itself is well-edited, but does contain a great deal of overinflated-language and jargon. Therefore, most lay-people will struggle with this work (which simply should not be the case). In this instance, an effortless, informative read is transformed into a dense "undertaking." This is always unfortunate.

Moreover, some of the examples and figures are very difficult to discern. There is one grey-scale example that I cannot decipher (at all). It is located on page 212 and is just a muddied blur. (It is also possible that I have a bad copy (?)).

Now, there are so definite problems with the presentation of this text. I found several sections so compelling that I attempted to share them with a colleague (who is older, but most assuredly, a well-respected authority). About ninety-minutes later, I found her in the hall. She handed the book back unceremoniously and noted that the font (in general) was a strain on her eyes. She then stated that the black-on-gray text-blocks were extremely difficult for her to read and the seven-point font used in the tables was impossible to decipher. I should have anticipated this since even I struggled to read the tables. Certainly, this is no reflection of the writer/author, but of the publishers who should have considered that some very sage but older eyes might have to view this text. Once my friend/colleague said that, I realized how many readers will truly be unable to read/enjoy this text ... merely as a result of poor publishing.

If you are a little older and are struggling with even standard sized font, this text (with its "small" and "smaller" fount) will prove a massive challenge (one that you might just lose). If possible, wait for a third-edition (maybe enough people will point-out this issue and the publishers will rectify it.)

A better title would be 'History and a New Philosophy of Human Factors'

This isn't a book about Human Factors. The huge majority of the book is actually the history of HF as a discipline, all framed to support the author's theory about a fundamental flaw in the philosophy of the discipline, and how to remedy it.

It isn't until chapter 6, at page 173, entitled 'Methods and Models' that the, well, methods and models of HF are discussed. Up until then, it's a historical survey of the field. Given that this book is only 272 pages of text, giving 173 of them to a historical survey is quite generous. But even the Methods and Models chapter is a high level view, a sort of Philosophy of Human Factors, not anything that could be mistaken for an introduction to the field.

The author's purpose in writing this book seems to be primarily to document and discredit any HF method that ignores broad, systemic context in any HF analysis. Lab-based studies get a lot of condescension. The argument is, i think, that as HF moves into the silicon age, the very philosophy of the field will need a reboot.

Whether or not you agree with the content or presentation thereof, the book itself is sorely lacking. There are a few images in the book, and they're all of the black-and-white, photocopy-of-a-photocopy quality that makes it nearly impossible to distinguish anything at all in them. The images are so low quality that the book would have been improved by omitting them. The text is slightly clearer than the images, but not much. Jargon flies hard and fast. I tripped over the word 'hermeneutic' on page 172. Not being familiar with that word, i flipped to the index. What i found there was 'Hermeneutics, universality of, 198, 202'. Only there on page 198 are we treated to the definition ('the study of interpretation' though google suggests it's usually applied to the bible or literary texts).

As i said above, this is not a book about HF. About the only category of person i could imagine reading and making use of this book would be a manager transferred into supervising an HF department, who wants familiarize themselves with the field whilst simultaneously finding a way to make their own print on their new department.

If you're actually interested in the field of HF, try books like Human Factors in Simple and Complex Systems, Second Edition. If what you really like is the stories of accidents, and then analyses of what went wrong from a HF perspective, try Set Phasers on Stun: And Other True Tales of Design, Technology, and Human Error.

Philosophical attempt to think differently abut Safety in Organizations

Sidney Dekker's new book is a brave attempt to think Philosophically and strategically about how we handle Safety issues in Organizations today. The book can be a dry read and the small font and graphics do not help much but the content is thought provoking and intriguing.

Dekker's main point seems to be that trust and confidence in human ability should replace the trust in "bureaucracy, protocol and process" (pg 235). While this is inspiring in itself and perhaps it is the way to move forward - to have faith in human potential instead of in processes - it would seem that the road to this goal may be fraught with many losses. Especially when considered from the perspective of safety in Aviation it seems a little na�ve to think that businesses should have blind faith in the ability of their workers when the cost of making a single mistake can result in the loss of hundred's of lives. Processes and protocols in the Aviation industry are put in place to standardize human performance to the best of the ability of each worker. Transitioning to trust in the individual without processes in place (when depression, distraction, etc., can and do interfere with performance) can be a dangerous idea. In fields where human error can have drastic consequences a transition to a more 'trusting' way of thinking may be the way of the future but the process of that transition could be an unacceptably dangerous one.

The book does do an excellent job of questioning how we have come to think about workers and safety processes today and has the potential to turn Safety thinking on it's head. It is a book meant more for those designing Human Factors improvements in the organizations rather than for lay persons in the field. It would probably be of little use to Safety investigators of airline crashes but would, on the other hand, be of some use to those designing how Safety investigators approach their reconstruction and examination of crashes. So, an intriguing read but not an easy game changer.

"The Mass of Men Lead Lives of Quiet Desparation"

So wrote Henry David Thoreau in the classic "Walden." After reading Marsha Sinetar's book, you will understand why.
Most people, for a variety of reasons, have been schooled away from listening to their "inner voice," which is there to guide us in the discovery of our inate talents and interests. This is the basis upon which we should be engaging in our "Right Livlihood," a Buddhist term to describe the work that we were destined to do, which is more than just earning a paycheck, but is fulfilling in a Maslow "self-actualization sense," and is in service to humankind.
Ms. Sinetar's masterpiece is written from the perspective of someone who has looked within themselves and has asked themselves the tough questions about the quality of life they are living. She posits that to ignore that inner longing is to basically live in denial, and untrue to yourself. This incongruity, she argues, is the root of a great deal of dissatisfaction that people have with their lives. Hence the admonition, "to thine own self be true," which is the antithesis of the quote from Thoreau.
This book was instrumental for me during a period of major depression that I was experiencing, that I credit it completely in helping me "find my way back," onto my unique path. Space prohibits me from sharing any details, but I will happily correspond anyone who feels that they are in the middle of a midlife, or carerr crisis.
But first, buy this book, heed its admonitions, and prepare for a major change in your life!

Title is all you need to read....

Basically the book tells some stories of people who have done this and succeeded. But for those who are truly concerned about the money following part it doesn't give much comfort. Basically the premise is if you do what you love you will do it so well you will make money at it. Yea, there is something to that theory but it doesn't take a book to say that and there are plenty of people who've found when they try to make a living out of what they love it took all the love out of what they were doing. So, this book doesn't help with anything.

This book was written by a psychologist years ago. The information in it is geared more towards ones psychological well being versus serving as a how to guide.

Whether you are a law student or a person with an interest in studying the practical principles behind legal writing, Calleros has so eloquently, yet strategically written this book in such a way that has taken some complicated legal terms, functions, and application of legal theory and breaks the material down into parts that are easier, and less complicated. This book has helped me tremendously--in terms of feeling more confident in my understanding of "Legal Methods and Writing" and, therefore, I have given this book a 5-star rating. In my opinion, having a good understanding is most of the battle of any craft we wish to perfect; the everyday practice of that craft would be the rest!
Thank you, Mr. Calleros, for sharing your knowledge so that others might feel more confident to pursue their legal interests. I am very grateful, and I am glad my professor has selected this book for our class to study.

Amazing

I liked the first book. I loved this book! I devoured it in mere hours! I love Clea and Landon! They truly are fabulous characters as well as all the supporting characters. The plot was great and some of the quotes from this book was fantastic!

Improvement with an intriguing ending

This novel has been out since February 2014 so I was shocked to see the amount of reviews it had on Goodreads, even though I was also weary of picking up the second copy, due to my disappointment with the first. However, I am here to say that this was an improvement that actually caught and held my interest as I went along. I couldn't even put it down in the last 5%.

Landon and Clea is not your conventional couple and I don't expect them to deal with the fall outs of this novel like your usual victims. A few things are still unclear but I connected with the characters this time and learnt to appreciate the many links that kept them together through the years.

Their wasn't an influx of arguments and break ups even though Clea tend to threaten Landon a lot with their relationship. The few arguments were crazy and needed basic communication but I like that they worked it out in their own time and unique ways that made them all a solid unit at the end. They didn't resort to irrational fights and struggles to build and keep the story going and weren't afraid to build and live from their happiness which is rare in stories of this genre.

I enjoyed and appreciated the relationship dynamics even the ones that weren't Clea and Landon's. We got a completely different Evelyn that made me want a piece of her tale to see this woman who takes charge and crushes anything in her path.

Landon was still overly and irrationally jealous but I found it endearing at times, as well as, the continual use of proper words as oppose to the more frequently used dialects. It's good to know that the author didn't run out of proper wording and the tidbits of french that are usually scattered throughout the series. I liked their games to say 'I love you' and the deals they made that remained a secret between them. I even got a back story that led to an appreciation for Ryan and Jude's relationship. The tense moments of this story also helped to highlight a different side to Jude that we never saw before and I have to say that I like it!

There were still a few glaringly obvious issues from the previous novel like the really bad editing and grammar errors and the confusion when it came to similar names. This time, it was Clea mixing up her nieces name with a woman that is hell bent on ruining her life.

A few characters that I didn't expect from book 1 were back but they did their part without seeming insignificant and made quite the impact on the story. I found myself wanting the next chapters because of all the events we had lined up in this novel. It was one event after a next and they all helped transition this story to the end.

It was good to see the growth in all the relationships and the Parisian roots that a few of the characters have. Not as intense and serious as the first story, this one had a more laid back vibe for the most part and I loved to see the friendships surrounding Clea, as well as, the moments Landon stepped out of his comfort zone to try Clea's world and all it had to offer.

Unfortunately, we are still learning some of the basics about the characters but somehow it works in their favour. It's just another tool that helps us as readers to experience their growth and learn as they take their time to their different futures without all the curve balls of cheating, marriage and babies. They talk and I love that because it makes me as a reader feel included.

The sex was frequent but quite frankly didn't do much for me. I understand it's purpose but I could do without half of the detailed sex scenes. I was more a fan of the conversations and progression than I was of their time spent in the sack.

Yes, I wanted insight into a few major issues that were left dangling in the last installment, but we had flashbacks and kept moving as we dealt with the issues of the past, present and future. The ending of this novel is rather unclear but it surely lines us up for an interesting book 3. Though it's still not a 100% I can truly say that the story line and progression improved and I am intrigued as to the reactions the next installment promises.

Clea and Landon's book 2--it's good!

First, the good. The author found an editor and this book is a huge improvement from book one. There's still some awkward phrasing, but nothing that detracts from the story. The characters are still likeable with a great supporting cast. I enjoyed the majority of this tale. Now, the not so good. There were a lot of ups and downs, and just when you think there would be some resolution, yes, you guessed it--another cliff hanger. I'll read book three to see if the author can proved me wrong--that she can successfully give us another good book with these characters.

About the Author
Kylene Beers, Ed.D., is a former middle school teacher who has turned her commitment to adolescent literacy and struggling readers into the major focus of her research, writing, speaking, and teaching. She is author of the best-selling When Kids Can't Read/What Teachers Can Do, co-editor (with Bob Probst and Linda Rief) of Adolescent Literacy: Turning Promise into Practice, and co-author (with Bob Probst) of Notice and Note: Strategies for Close Reading and Reading Nonfiction, Notice & Note Stances, Signposts, and Strategies all published by Heinemann. She taught in the College of Education at the University of Houston, served as Senior Reading Researcher at the Comer School Development Program at Yale University, and most recently acted as the Senior Reading Advisor to Secondary Schools for the Reading and Writing Project at Teachers College. Kylene has published numerous articles in state and national journals, served as editor of the national literacy journal, Voices from the Middle, and was the 2008-2009 President of the National Council of Teachers of English. She is an invited speaker at state, national, and international conferences and works with teachers in elementary, middle, and high schools across the US. Kylene has served as a consultant to the National Governor's Association and was the 2011 recipient of the Conference on English Leadership outstanding leader award. Robert (Bob) Probst is the author of Response and Analysis, he is coeditor (with Kylene Beers and Linda Rief) of Adolescent Literacy: Turning Promise into Practice, and coauthor (with Kylene Beers) of Notice and Note: Strategies for Close Reading, and Reading Nonfiction, Notice & Note Stances, Signposts, and Strategies all published by Heinemann. Bob has also published over one hundred articles, chapters, and monographs in national and international publications. Bob began his teaching career as high school English teacher and then became a supervisor of English for a large district in Maryland. He spent most of his academic career at Georgia State University where he is now Professor Emeritus of English Education. After retiring from Georgia State University, he served as a research fellow for Florida International University. Bob is now a consultant to schools, nationally and internationally, focusing on literacy improvement. He works in schools with his colleague and co-author, Kylene Beers. Bob has served as a member on the Conference on English Board of Directors, an NCTE journal columnist, a member of the national advisory board to American Reading Company, and a member of the NCTE Commission on Reading. In 2004 he was awarded the NCTE's Exemplary Leadership Award, presented by the Conference on English Leadership.

should be required reading-- you won't regret it!

This is the BEST book I've EVER read on teaching reading. I've taught reading for 8 years and as a voracious reader myself, I know it can be hard to teach students specific skills that are so automatic for myself. This book has been perfectly written and organized that you and your students could start learning TODAY about how to "notice and note" the signposts that authors use to alert you to important information.
The beginning of the book includes information about the state of reading, teaching and learning today. The middle goes over the various signposts, and the third section includes complete lessons WITH sample texts that you can teach to your students.
These skills are vital for ALL readers--from strugglers to gifted students. It is the first step in teaching them how to think about literature and in preparing them for college level reading.
BUY THIS BOOK! I wish every teacher in my district had this book!

7th Grade Reading Teacher

WITHOUT HESITATION: Buy This Book! If you teach middle-level reading (I teach 7th grade "regular" reading classes) and are struggling with how to teach CLOSE/DEEP reading, this is your new best resource. I have absolutely no connection with the authors--I am simply speaking from a classroom teacher's point of view--and omigosh, this has been my saving grace with CCSS and close reading. I have truly seen the light with the Notice and Note signposts (they are kind of like strategies--not to be confused with Strategies That Work), and more importantly, so have my students.

I received the book on a Thursday, started reading it that weekend--with many "AHA!" moments--and on Monday morning I started in with my first signpost lesson. I knew INSTANTLY that my students were "getting it!" Seriously, I have had moments of giddiness and chills while working with the kids on the different signposts. I have never been this excited about a book.

It is incredibly easy to read. The six introductory lessons are there for you, scripted even, so you easily get the idea of how to teach the signposts, and the text selections are in the back of the book for copying. The authors are very "real" with their comments and how their signpost implementation in the classroom panned out. Lots of "Bwahaha!" moments where I laughed that they were keeping it real with me!

Notice and Note is a perfect fit with the CCSS. My students are easily citing text evidence with the signposts and focusing on the accompanying questions. The questions really bring home the deep thinking that I've struggled with (how to teach) since the advent of the term "close reading." We have been studying The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, and without a doubt, these signposts have deepened my students' understanding and questioning of the novel. We are using our iNotebooks along with the signpost implementation. The kids have easily begun to internalize the signposts, cite evidence (from the signposts), and deepen their thinking with the questions--keeping up with it all in their notebooks.

The six strategies have made me a better reader, as well. I told my students the other day that I would no longer be afraid to join my neighborhood book study (my fear has always been that profound thoughts and ideas would be expected of me because I teach reading!).

I could say soooo much more about how in our discussions we have even gone back to other novels we have studied or that students have read independently and talked about the signposts we realize were in them...PLUS... although I am not an English teacher, I can say that these signposts would fit perfectly in a writing program to help add voice and style to narrative pieces. Have I sold you on this yet?

Refreshing and Practical

Kylen Beers and Bob Probst have given teachers (and the children they teach) a wonderful gift in the form of their new book, Notice and Note. I read this book quickly and felt as if I'd struck gold and am now rereading it to mine all the little pieces I missed the first time through. Practical and smart writing, careful and deliberate research and an easy to read format, make this text a must for literacy teachers, literacy coaches, reading interventionists and curriculum directors. My favorite gems include the streamlined language about big concepts that teach children how to notice and take note of six particular sign-posts found in most literature. Short, applicable and adaptable lessons about these six signposts are truly what teachers need access to and after my first round of using one lesson in a 5th grade classroom this morning, I had four students approach me to tell me how they were already noticing the concept in their lives or books! As a district literacy coach in a high-performing district, I will be doing a book study with my entire staff using this refreshing and practical text that houses many gems and will certainly change how you look at and teach children how to "read closely". Highly applicable to grades 3-12!

About the Author
The author of several books including The Bushman Myth, and the co-edited Tarzan was an Eco-tourist, Rob Gordon has done field research in Namibia, Lesotho, South Africa, and Papua New Guinea. Interesting read for the conscious traveler

I was assigned this book for a class and I admit I had put off reading it. However, I did start to read it when I went on my latest vacation to Central America. When I started reading the book, I was a little turned off because I thought it was filled with a lot of common sense. However, as I continued to read and continued to travel, the book really started to resonate with me.
