Arias well arranged for piano

These opera arias are for the piano, not for accompanying actual singing, of course you can sing-along. They are correctly described as intermediate advanced. There is another book in the series for easy intermediate playing on the same Arias. Looks the same with the same arias but with a green cover. I recommend them both if you are starting on the piano and love opera.

Worthy Transcriptions

The full title of this book is Opera at the Piano: 74 Favorite Selections from 45 Operas Transcribed for Intermediate to Advanced Piano Solo. The title is quite accurate in that nearly all of the selections included are well known "favorite selections." Included are: "Celesta Aida" and the "Triumphal March" from AIDA, "Una voce poco fa" from IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA, four selections each from LA BOHEME, CARMEN, MAGIC FLUTE and LE NOZZE DI FIGARO, three selections each from DON GIOVANNI, MADAMA BUTTERFLY, MANON LESCAUT, RIGOLETTO, TOSCA, LA TRAVIATA, and one or two selections each from: MARTHA, I PAGLIACCI, HANSEL UND GRETEL, LOUISE, LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR, LA RONDINE, SAMSON ET DALILA, Il TROVATORE, etc. As would be implied by any listing of "favorites," the time period covered is basically Mozart through Puccini, with a few earlier chestnuts thrown in (a couple of selections from Handel's SERSE and GIULIO CESARE and "When I am laid in earth" from Purcell's DIDO AND AENEAS). The book includes transcriptions of instrumental works as well as vocal works -- the Intermezzo from Macagni's CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA, the Waltzes from Strauss' DER ROSENKAVALIER, the Mediation from Massanet's THAIS, and overtures to Rossini's GUILLAUME TELL and Glinka's RUSLAN AND LYUDMILA. None of the well known instrumental music of Wagner is included and his presence in this volume is limited to two selections from TANNHAUSER. Included at the beginning of the book are short paragraph-length synopses of all of the operas represented which would no doubt be helpful to those unfamiliar with all of the operas represented. The transcriptions are pianistic and work well at the keyboard. None of the transcribers are identified. The pieces are of medium to advanced difficulty. These are not transcriptions in the sense of the virtuosic Lisztian operatic transcriptions where Liszt wrote new compositions based on operatic melodies. Instead, these are straightforward faithful piano transcriptions of works originally written for voice and orchestra. It is unlikely that any of these pieces would be included on recital programs. I see the main function of these pieces as giving opera loving pianists hours of pleasure playing through them for him/herself and maybe for friends.

Excellent transcriptions

Unless you are a virtuoso pianist and can handle the Liszt transcriptions of opera, this is a fantastic way to play some of the greatest opera music on solo piano.
I particularly like the "Revenge Song" from "The Magic Flute." These are for intermediate to intermediate-advanced (you can play some Beethoven Sonatas, for example) and deliver a lot of pleasing sound for the effort.

Beautiful writing about beautiful writing.

Is there any critic of fiction or poetry better than Helen Vendler? I always avoided poetry, thinking it the literary equivalent of green vegetables. But in these essays, Vendler calmly and precisely explains what works about a certain poem. Vendler's close reading and teacherly - but never condescending - voice made me want to read more poems, yes, but more than anything, they made me want to read more Vendler. Vendler's interpretive theory would probably be criticised as hopelessly 'undertheorized' new criticism, but that is part of its charm. In her way, Vendler has convinced me of the value and beauty of literary creation.

The most Vendler for the buck & astonishingly good!

I've been immersed in this book for the last two weeks. The chapter on Wallace Stevens alone is worth the price of admission. Vendler is so good on so many poets it makes my head spin. Anyone who can get me interested in A.A. Ammons has my attention. She's gifted as a deep reader and as someone with a thorough sense of context. This is judgment you can trust and continue to learn from. This book sat on my shelf for three years until I moved it into the reading room; now I'm accumulating all her books. Reading her is infectious. You can follow her through the looking glass and live to tell about it. A few quibbles - nothing on Larkin so far, and a brazen, intentional insult to Philip Levine (equating him with Rod McKuen should be a hanging offense; read The Second Angel, one of the most beautiful poems in the last fifty years). Then read her on James Merrill. And finally some rationality about Anne Sexton. When she's fair, which is almost all the time, she's thrilling.

I came to the party wanting to find out what the Trilling / Vendler controversy was all about, but I've been completely won over by her sensitivity and intellect. If this isn't a five star publishing event, I don't know what is.

I don't always agree with her but she writes superbly.

I may not always agree with Helen Vendler. For example, she doesn't care much for Philip Levine, whereas I hold him in the highest regard. She loves A.R. Ammons, while I find his work to be unexciting. But her opinions are always well argued, and her writing, engaging. I'm sure both she and Harold Bloom might look askance on this observation: but they are similar in their viewpoints and their erudition. In brief, one is well advised to read both of them. Buy this book.

AN EXCELLENT SELECTION OF ESSAYS FROM A DIVERSE GROUP OF WRITERS

Coeditor Daisy Hernandez has also written A Cup of Water Under My Bed: A Memoir. Bushra Rehman has also written Corona.

Rehman wrote in the Introduction to this 2002 book, “They’re just going to use our pain as an excuse for more violence… It’s what I hear again and again in a city that is grieving, that is beginning to see what other countries live every day. But where does women of color feminism fit into all of this? Everywhere. As women of color feminists, this is what we have to think about.” (Pg. xviii)

They both explain, “When we began editing this book, we knew only a little about each other. We were two dark-haired women who moved in overlapping circles… It was while editing this book, however, that we realized how much a Pakistani-Muslim girl from Queens could have in common with a Catholic, Cuban-Columbian girl from New Jersey… we chose the title of Cristina Tzintzuin’s essay for this book in order to acknowledge how the stories of women and colonization are intimately tied… To colonize is ‘to strip a people of their culture, language, land, family structure, who they are as a person and as a people.’ … As young women of color, we have both a different and similar relationship to feminism as the women in our mother’s generation… now we talk about these issues in women’s studies classes, in classrooms that are multicultural but xenophobic and in a society that pretends to be racially integrated but remains racially profiled…

“We hope that this book will introduce some of the ideas of woman of color feminism to women who have thought that feminism is just a philosophy about white men and women and has nothing to do with our communities. We also want this book to deepen conversations between young women of color. We believe that hearing each other out about our differences and similarities is an important step toward figuring out how to work with whatever divides us… We know that one book can’t do it all, and our lack of money and time made it difficult to reach women who also lacked those resources. But we hope that this anthology will inspire other women to fill in our gaps and move the work forward and deeper.”

To give you a brief idea of the essays contained herein, here are some excerpts:

Cristina Tzintzuin’s essay states, “I remember reading Listen Up: Voices from the Next Feminist Generation and being angry that the book contained only one Latina contributor, who I was only able to tell was Latina, not by what she had written but by her Spanish surname. I felt the book had represented many other minority groups well, but I felt invisible. I find it frustrating that when most books mention womyn of color, that ‘color’ and ‘gender’ are presented as something separate. I am not just a womon or just a person of color---I am a womon of color.” (Pg. 27)

Paula Austin comments, “I have only to look at my mother to see it is possible to be both femme and feminist. For me and for many poor and working-class women who have struggled to support themselves and their families, who have struggled to be strong through the physical and emotional manifestations of oppression and colonization. The stories my mother has told me about herself… these stories I keep alive and recount as evidence of the strength of the women in my family.” (Pg. 168-169)

Almas Sayeed observes, ,”There are few guidebooks for women like me who are trying to negotiate the paradigm of feminism in two different worlds. There is a delicate dance here that I must master---a dance of negotiating identity with interlinking cultural spheres. When faced with the movement’s expectations of my commitment to local issues, it becomes important for me to emphasize that differences in culture and religion are also ‘local issues.’ This has forced me to change my frame of reference… learning to be a committed feminist and still keep my cultural, religious and community ties.” (Pg. 214)

Tanmeet Sethi recalls, “Today I sit in a caf� with two Western women who are disturbed by the burkha. I explain to them that it is a tool of oppression in some countries and in others, some women choose to wear it. They shudder at this thought as they sip their latt�s. One is encased in makeup and wears a tight shirt with capri pants. Another wears a midriff shirt and jeans with her =hair flowing over her neck and around her face. I explain that many women in the world use the burkha as a symbol of power, as a statement of their value system. Women who wear the burka refuse to be judged by their body or face. They want to be seen as another being, not as a sensual object. In this way, the burkha can be a tool of empowerment.” (Pg. 254)

Susan Muaddi Darraj notes, “It struck me that many of the women I met could be considered feminists, perhaps not by the standard of the white Western feminism that I had encountered in my feminist theory class, but by the standards of a different feminism---one that allowed women to retain their culture, to have pride in their traditions and so still vocalize the gender issues of their community. These were women whom I considered feminists because they believed in the dignity and potential for upward mobility of every women; they wanted to erase class lines between women; they worked so that they could have choices in their lives and not be channeled into one way of life.” (Pg. 301)
