About the Author

William Smith

William Smith has been writing on software since 1988, when his parents asked him to make a choice between a school-sponsored trip to Europe (which his elder sister was enjoying at the time), or a computer. Although accused of being short-sighted, William chose the computer and he firmly believes he got the better deal. He began writing about software on the Tandy 1000 SL/2 using Turbo C++ and has been hooked on the technology ever since. He began his professional career in the environmental field eight years later with degrees in Environmental Science and Business Administration. While working in this field full-time, he started his first business focused on installing and managing small commercial networks and websites. In this role, he saw a need for specialized network analysis tools, so he learned VB.NET and wrote simple console applications for his own use. From there, he continued writing applications as a hobbyist before returning to the University of Maryland for a second Bachelor's degree in Computer Science. While still completing the Computer Science program, he was offered a position with a software development firm based in Pittsburgh, PA, where he spent the next few years working with .NET and Xamarin developing iOS applications. As a result of this experience, he was asked to be a technical reviewer for iOS Development with Xamarin Cookbook, Dimitris Tavlikos, Packt Publishing. William currently works for GIS Inc. in Birmingham, AL, as a Geospatial Developer specializing in native mobile application development. He also owns Websmiths, LLC (www.websmithsllc.com), a consulting firm concentrating on cross-platform mobile application development using Xamarin Studio. He lives in wild and wonderful West Virginia with his beautiful wife and four sons. He enjoys hunting and fishing with his family, and he still hasn't been to Europe.

'Learning Xamarin Studio' can be a great resource for the developer with little to no experience in mobile development and interest in the Xamarin platform. The book walks you through the 'Hello World' app but it is not a coding how-to. This is about all the other logistics that go into the mobile development lifecycle in Xamarin Studio. Topics include, Xamarin pricing, necessary resources, configuration, development tools, testing and deployment. This is for both iOS an d Android.

If you have experience in either iOS or Android, some of this will not doubt be review or just completely skipped over. But knowing the logistics of both platforms will certainly give you a leg up if you aim to try your hand at cross-platform development.

All-in-All there is not a whole lot of information in this book that you couldn't get elsewhere. But having all of the info in one place and in the context of developing in Xamarin could make this book valuable to a developer new to Xamarin and/or mobile development.

This book is a comprehensive tutorial and reference for installing the Xamarin Platform, configuring your development environment, and compiling & deploying your mobile apps. William Smith provides details on many overlooked, but necessary, elements in the mobile development life cycle.

Many mobile development books focus on the nuts and bolts of developing applications. That, of course, is core for developing applications. But there is more to the development life-cycle than writing code. Having a thorough understanding of your IDE, your development environment and the tasks involved outside of writing the actual code are very important. This book covers these topics well.

Mac users will typically use Xamarin Studio to develop Xamarin applications, so having a resource that provides details on making sure your environment is configured properly and tips on how to optimize your development experience is important.

Some other valuable sections include: Unit testing, application life-cycle, debugging and deploying. For many, this resource will provide a broad view of what it takes to develop mobile apps using Xamarin Studio, and could also be leveraged by non-developers as well.

Developers making the transition to Xamarin mobile development will benefit from many parts of this book.

Rosen specifically addresses the ways a redefined Owenism, originally designed to reform ruthless labor practices, ultimately enables Davis to construct a more talented and versatile slave workforce that propels him to enviable economic heights. These transformations of Owen's so-called Utopian scheme further inform the accomplishments of the two most immediate beneficiaries of Davis' refined Owenism: the former Davis Bend slave Benjamin T. Montgomery, who took over the Davis holdings in the aftermath of the Civil War; and his son Isaiah T. Montgomery, who co-founded and ultimately presided over Mound Bayou s earliest years. From New Lanark to Mound Bayou has cross-discipline appeal for those with interests in sociology, history, and economics, as well as American- and African-American studies, Southern studies, communitarian studies, and political theory.

Joseph Davis, older brother of Jefferson Davis, read Owen's book and met him in New Harmony, Indiana...Joseph felt Owen's principals could be used on his Hurricane Plantation, Vicksburg, MS for better productivity. The labor force could educate and improve themselves for the betterment of the whole. Joseph sold the farm to Benjamin Montgomery, ex-slave that Joseph trained in farm and business operations, Joseph died but left provisions to help the Montgomery family be a success under Owen Principals. But army worms, MS river floods, farm land converted to Jefferson Davis due to non payment of principal, and death of Ben Montgomery in farm accident...transferred leadership to Isaiah Thornton Montgomery, Ben's son. With freedom of slaves came labor competition and the plantation closed labor system crumbled. Isaiah realized that people now needed an investment in ownership so this principal of ownership and capitalism moved to Mound Bayou, MS. Owens principal of Improving yourself for the good of the community remained in place. The leadership of Isaiah Thornton Montgomery took a portion of the slave labor force and gave them a bridge for self-improvement and responsibility of governing themselves in an all black community of Mound Bayou. When the crop prices failed in the South...the Mound Bayou residents were able to blend into American society in a more harmonious movement. The Montgomery family were social reformers with the vision of Joseph Davis and hopefully a movie will be made of this social journey someday. Owens socialism failed in Scotland, New Harmony Indiana, and Vicksburg (under free labor market conditions). I felt this book missed the true importance of thus journey and the Montgomery family's impact on converting ignorant slave force to productive citizens.

1998 edition was excellent, esp. for exp., in shape hiker

We got this book in Canada and knew nothing about the different trails in the parks covered by the book. We really liked it - very good descriptions and selection of wonderfully senic trails, and all the hikes we took were really neat - we only took hikes in the premier or outstanding class. We changed our (loosely) planned itinery to do some of the hikes described as premier and were not disappointed. "Opiniated" yes, but most hikers would share the opinions and preferences. We avoided several less desireable hikes because of their lower senic ratings. Only possible criticism is that the difficulty rating and times for hikes was aimed at those who are not in the over 50, over 50lbs overweight category like me and I was slower and worked harder than the rating. Would be accurate for younger hikers in better shape. Overall, however, a very, very good guide.

Events become even stranger as the self-proclaimed "action nerds," Nate, photographer Clay, their research assistant Amy, and Kona, a white Rasta (a Jewish kid from New Jersey), encounter sabotage to their data and equipment. They also observe increasingly bizarre whale behavior, including a phone call from the whale to their wealthy sponsor to ask that Nate bring it a hot pastrami and Swiss on rye, and discover both a thriving underwater city and the secret to what happened to Amelia Earhart.

Go, go, go!

Some of Christopher Moore's funniest work. Or at least most absurd. Or at least, um, something. I've yet to read anything by him that didn't make me absurdly happy, and I've read, I think, eighty percent of his library?

This is a good, weird little story that never lacks for a smart laugh while still making you care about the larger narrative and the individual character arcs.

The scene with the boat the giant, yeah, appendages might not fall under the category of smart laughs, but it's one that'll stick with you for sure.

More good clean fun from Moore!

I'm a huge fan of Christopher Moore, but when I read the description of the book on the jacket (something about scientists studying whales), I have to admit I wasn't too interested. But my faith in Moore caused me to go ahead and take the plunge. I'm very glad I did.

This is his first real "science-fiction" book, with the science of whales and whale communication playing an important role. As near as I can tell, much of the opening third of the book contains lots of "true" information about the state of our knowledge of whales today. Later, when the book goes off on some truly bizarre tangents, the "fiction" is well thought out. It's insane, but well thought out!

We follow the adventures of a group of people with various interests in learning about whales, from serious scientists to hangers-on, to stoners just looking for easy work. The best thing about Moore's novels are the wacky characters, who manage to become sweet and endearing by the end of the book. His novels are crazily plotted, but characters always come to the fore. There are some funny romances and some minor characters that are just a lot of fun. It's the kind of book that you imagine getting a big-screen treatment as you're reading it...you just want to start casting it in your head. And Moore, to me, is one of the few writers who actually evokes laugh-out-loud moments. Just clever turns of a phrase or an unlikely methaphor that makes me laugh in admiration.

I hesitate to discuss the plot, because to give you a sketchy overview might turn you off, and to go into depth would reveal too many of the delightful treats in store. If you've read and enjoyed Moore before, by all means take a look. If you haven't read Christopher Moore and are in the mood for some wacky but touching fun...take a look. I think you'll be pleased.

Whales and Their-uh-Songs-ahem

This book should be sold at the Phallic Museum in Reykjavik Iceland, right next to the preserved whale willies in their really really big jars. In fact, the most hilarious scene in the book has to do with the aforementioned items.
Fluke isn't as jam-packed with funny scenes as other Moore books, but it has plenty of unforgettable characters. Kona the ersatz Hawaiian Rastafarian was my favorite. Unfortunately, Moore couldn't quite slide his message in with the twisted humor as neatly as he has in the past (Lamb, Coyote Blue, ), so he was forced to put it in an appendix, albeit a humorous one.
In general, while Fluke was well worth reading, it was missing Moore's usual go-for-broke insanity

About the Author

Bill Lubanovic has developed software with UNIX since 1977, GUIs since 1981, databases since 1990, and the Web since 1993.

At a startup named Intran in 1982, he developed MetaForm -- one of the first commercial GUIs (before the Mac or Windows), on one of the first graphic workstations. At Northwest Airlines in the early 1990s, he wrote a graphic yield management system that generated millions of dollars in revenue; got the company on the Internet; and wrote its first Internet marketing test. He co-founded an ISP (Tela) in 1994, and a web development company (Mad Scheme) in 1999.

Recently, he developed core services and distributed systems with a remote team for a Manhattan startup. Currently, he's integrating OpenStack services for a supercomputer company.

He enjoys life in Minnesota with his wonderful wife Mary, children Tom and Karin, and cats Inga, Chester, and Lucy.

Insightful and fast-paced intro to Python

This is an insightful and fast-paced intro to Python, written by an experienced master coder. It's written for coders (unlike the plethora of basic Python books on the market). The very first chapter presents a non-trivial 9-line Python program that pulls and prints top-rated videos from the Youtube site (the code works). The book covers many of the language features as well as areas such as web programming, databases, and concurrency. The book is a pleasure to browse through: an intelligent and informed writer writing for an intelligent readership. After reading this book one will be ready for Wesley Chun's "Core Python Applications Programming."

I've just started reading, and already I've encountered a pretty big error regarding substring indexing on page 33. Be sure to check the errata as you progress through this book.

An Edible Introduction to Python

"Introducing Python" by Bill Lubanovic is an edible recipe for learning Python. I had limited exposure to Python (I completed 50% of the Codecademy training) prior to reading "Introducing Python". Lubanovic is ab iron chef that has written this delectable book.
Beginning with Chapters 1-5 (1. A Taste of Python, 2. Python Ingredients, 3. PyFilling, 4. PyCrust, and 5. PyBoxes), the reader starts to build their mental palate using a small cookbook style dialog for making an actual pie! This was very informative and one of the best analogies within the book. Lubanovic skillfully separates the importance of data structure such as list, dictionaries, tuples, and set from code structure (commenting, if elif else, utf-8 encoding, pep, etc.) which allowed me to become familiar with the essential building blocks of the Python language. "Introducing Python" is a very definitive guide to what makes Python a valuable and powerful language. Since Python 2.7's end-of-life is scheduled in 2020, Lubanovic encouraged Pythonistas to begin writing Python code using Python 3 instead of 2.7. Being relatively new to the language, I couldn't resist the urge to discover more about the differences between the two versions. At the time of this writing, there are still subtle differences between Python 2.7 and Python 3. The changes include how to call the print() function, and the handling of Unicode characters. Most of the differences between version 2.7 and 3.0 can be found at https://wiki.python.org/moin/Python2orPython3.
Unfortunately, Chapters 6-9 (6. Oh Oh: Objects and Classes, 7. Mangle Data Like a Pro, 8. Data Has to Go Somewhere, 9. The Web Untangled) proved difficult for me to comprehend due to my inexperience. Lubanovic attempts to ease the reader into this section skillfully in Chapter 6, with analogies such as "In Chapter 1, I compare an object to a plastic box. A class is like the mold that makes that box." I couldn't agree with this analogy as I had to learn the complex object-oriented terminology, like polymorphism, instantiation and inheritance, discussed throughout this chapter.
Chapters 7-8 puts "Introducing Python" into high gear. I did not take the term "Pro" lightly within this section. Essentially, I now understand why data scientist, forensic analysts, cloud engineers, and automation engineers consider Python for their projects. Data can take many forms that include text strings, ASCII or binary. These types of data need to be written, read, encoded, decoded and stored properly. Lubanovic clearly conveyed the message that data should be handled with precision. UTF-8 encoding, byte arrays, and matching regular expression all took some time for me to understand. There are tons of options that include storing data between RAM, CSVs, JSON, or SQL and NoSQL Databases. Both mangling and storing data requires a certain level of mastery that has convinced me to keep Introducing Python as a reminder to sharpen my skills in this area of expertise.
Chapters 9-12 (9.The Web, Untangled, 10. Systems, 11. Concurrency and Networks,12. Be a Pythonista), are my favorite chapters in Introducing Python. Chapter 9 explains how Python's standard Web libraries handle the various components of the Web. It describes mainly the http and urlib packages, but also makes notable references to web frameworks such as Bottle and Flask. Chapter 10 dived into how Python handles files, directories, processes and time using the os (Operating System) module. The os module contains the functions copy(),chown(), remove(), mkdir(),rmdir() and many more that operate the same way as their Linux/UNIX counterparts. Chapter 11 reinforces Chapter 10's section on process management via the os module and using multiprocessing. Diving deeper into the concurrency standard library (http://bit.ly/concur-lib) within Python, Lubanovic discusses the differences between queues, process, and threads, as well as the tools to manage them on a single machine or multiple machines. Noticabley, Redis, gevent, asyncio, and twisted are mentioned as additional tools that handle concurrency within Python as well. In the Networks section, Lubanovic explores the plumbing provided by the numerous Internet Services supported within Python. TCP/IP, Sockets, Web APIs (fabric), RPCs and Message Brokers (RabbitMQ /ZeroMQ) are all covered in great detail. This chapter is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in gaining a more in-depth knowledge of how use Python to manage concurrency across distributed systems and networks. Chapter 12 sets the example for ALL Python users, by encouraging them to "Be A Pythonista". Noticeably, Being a Pythonista is no small task. The requirements consist of: Finding Code, Installing Packages, Documenting Your Code, Testing Your code, Optimizing your code, and Managing your code via Source Control�€� Whew... Humbly, I accept this challenge and hope to become a proficient Pythonista and encourage everyone interested in Python to do the same.
In closing, Introducing Python was remarkable read for me. I recommend studying this book and holding onto for future reference in real-world scenarios.

4 Super Sweet and Very Nice Stars

I have liked books that Harley McRide and Carson Mackenzie wrote individually, so I grabbed this one when I recognized the characters that were in another series I’ve read. It ended up being an okay read, but it didn’t wow me.

I loved the set up of the book. After doing well for themselves, the O’Malley brothers and Tony Roark (a good friend), decide to move back to their old Bronx neighborhood to clean it up. Things went off the rails a bit when it talked about the special ink that could be used to track bad guys that they were using in their tattoo guns, (I mean come on, they would put you under the jail for that if it was found out!) but I decided to put my blinders on and go with it.

I did like most of the characters, all very sweet and really, really nice but I just couldn’t get past how most of them seemed a bit dimwitted. Brooklyn was a textbook example of TSTL and she was so freaking naive and clueless I just wanted to shake her at times. She also very rarely showed she had a backbone, and when she did it was over something dumb. Tony and Fin were almost as bad. Sometimes it felt like I’d been dropped into a Keystone Cop show.

This is a m�nage book so there were definitely a few steamy scenes. Brooklyn was so clueless as to what Fin and Tony wanted from her I found myself having a hard time believing in the relationship once it got going.

What saved the book was the meddling mothers (they were hilarious) and the fact that I loved the idea of the characters and what they were trying to do. I also loved seeing the Ops Warriors when they made an appearance. I’m going to hope that this book suffered from a serious case of first-in-series-itis resulting in a just okay book and go ahead and read the next one.

As a cosmetic surgery patient advisor I am always looking for tools to better enhance my consultations with patients. "Aesthetic Plastic Surgery" is one of those great tools. It helps patients to better understand the process and procedures that they are inquiring about. It is definitely a must have for all Cosmetic Surgery offices. It is also great for anyone, whether you are considering a cosmetic procedure or whether you just find the details of cosmetic procedures and surgeries fascinating.

Great book. Great schemes and grafics (not seen in other books). Very well update. It's not encyclopedia like (1000pages) but you can find the best options of techniques. The rinoplasty chapter and the facelift are the best part. Maybe they shouldn't include the breast recontruction and use that space for something else (I mean, although the chapter is really good this is an aesthetic book). Finally: you should have this one at hand.
