A new approach to beekeeping, fascinating even for nonbeekeepers!

Well worth buying! The author, who teaches beekeeping in Ireland, has written an inviting and informative book based on his decades of care of honeybees. His experiments with hive design led to a new kind of hive for his own bees, and the book explains why this improved layout can help keep everyone's bees healthier, wherever they live. Every change he made from conventional beehive structures has a reason, and the author goes back to the way bees behave in the wild to explain how beekeepers can help rather than hinder their ability to thrive. A keen observer, it's clear that the author has taken the time to understand what bees really need. I enjoyed this book even though I don't keep bees. It may be addressed to beekeepers and contain plans to build hives, but it has so much more, in history, observation, essay and story, that it's a cover-to-cover read, fascinating enough for every reader.

Must for any beekeeper's book collection. Worth it for the hive-management strategies alone.

Fantastic book detailing some of the pitfalls of modern beekeeping methods and how to avoid them. I've been a keen bee-enthusiast for over 15 years, and some of these issues have been a problem for me and my family. I will be buying several more copies to share with other beekeepers, and possibly donating a few to the local library system.

The author details how to build a Rose hive (including free plans), so I disagree with a previous reviewer that suggested that Tim Rowe is only pushing sale of his particular hive. I think this book is a must read for any system, and could be adapted to the ubiquitous Langstroth hive with a bit of planning and a few medium supers. His thoughts on methods of keeping a hygienic hive are brilliant, and the concept of banishing the queen excluder makes a great deal of sense.

Those of you who are already invested in a particular method of beekeeping, it's still well worth the read to reconsider your current hive-management strategies.

This was a great book on this kind of hive method. It is not a book with all the details on how to raise bees if there is what you are looking for, but it gives a good overview of why the Rose method has some advantages over other older methods. YouTube also has several videos from this author I recommend you check out.

A Cracklin' Good Read!

I quite enjoyed Townsend’s first book, Queen City Gothic, delving into Cincinnati’s most infamous unsolved cases. I think I like Notorious even better than Gothic, just for the closure. Here, Townsend peels back the mysteries and exposes these fascinating murder cases to light.

Queen City Notorious is the perfect mix of crimes and time periods throughout the 20th Century. For each case, Townsend describes what happened and puts the case in historical context with other major events occurring around the world. He then describes the players in each drama, what happened and why. For some crimes in the book, though ostensibly solved, there are still major facts or actions that are unknown. Townsend expertly speculates what may have happened and who probably was—and wasn’t—involved.

The first case is one of the most horrific—in 1910, Alice Van Zandt is roasted to death over a gas oven by her husband, left to die while their small child tottled around in the next room. The most outright shocking case was failed businessman Vinton Perin shooting his wealthy mother-in-law Frances Rawson in her Clifton mansion in 1924. Today that case would cause a national sensation and rock every tabloid on the market. It’s almost funny how local papers didn’t know how to report the case of Betty Butler, a black lesbian, drowning her love rival Evelyn Clark. They couldn’t report many aspects of the story in “family” papers in 1952.

One of the outright strangest stories is when all-American college athlete Jack Rauss slew Goldie Cunningham and her disabled husband James in 1961. It seems he went to visit them and Goldie said something bad about his mother, her close friend, which Jack couldn’t abide. There’s even a bad-boy/girlfriend love triangle murder. Bobby Abbot was going with Alice Ewing in 1964, but he tricked nursing student Wanda Cook into coming to his room at the old Sheraton Gibson Hotel. When she wouldn’t succumb to his desires, he killed her. Alice helped him put the body in a trunk and ship it cross-country. When they were arrested, they couldn’t blame each other fast enough.

Townsend ends the book with another odd passion crime: the murder of Dr. Jane Shutt by her adopted daughter Barbara. When Barbara learned her adopted parents were separating and she would have to move out and make her own way, she lost her mind and murdered her mother most viciously. There are many other gruesome and unusual cases in the book.

You don’t have to be from Cincinnati to marvel at these crimes of passion and gain—you can enjoy the sharp police work and seeing the bad guys get what’s coming regardless of where these crimes happened. Townsend unfolds these stories layer by layer, unraveling the mystery into a just, if not always satisfying, conclusion. Once you get your teeth into one of these stories you won’t be able to stop reading them all. A must-read for true crime buffs and ID Investigation addicts.

Enthralling!

As a follow-up to Queen City Gothic, Queen City Notorious satisfies equally well, in fact, better––since this time the murderers (if still alive when their crimes are uncovered) are identified, caught and brought to justice. J.T. Townsend’s meticulous research and painstaking detail give us front-row seats to crime scenes, perpetrators’ backgrounds, relentless police work in unraveling cases, and eventual punishments.

Vintage photos provide terrific take-you-there perspectives. In some cases, victims feel almost like family members; we come to know them that well. Seventeen-year-old college freshman Susan Aue, for example, shot while still half-asleep in her bed during Christmas break by ex-boyfriend Gordon Pape, is particularly tragic; she possessed the quadruple “threat” of brains, beauty, charm and a loving, privileged family. Such a sad loss of so much potential––and the sadder awareness that if her stalker had behaved so irrationally not in 1956, but 50 years later in 2006, cops would surely have been notified early on to monitor his comings and goings.

This book is a riveting read, chock full of behind-the-scenes trivia and police-blotter specifics. We can’t help being impressed by detectives who began with just a dead body and somehow constructed motive, deed and case worthy of trial. Author Townsend creates a linear path that not only in hindsight makes easy, logical sense––but also enthralls true-crime fans who relish and ride along with so many initial twists and turns.

I AM ADDICTED TO TOWNSEND

Having read QUEEN CITY GOTHIC, I had to read this second book of Townsend's. How could I live my entire life in a city so full of horrible awesomeness and not even realize it?! I had no clue what my own city had to offer and that is sad for me. But these books--I don't know how to put this, but I have trouble putting them down. I go by many of the murder/crime scenes every day!! Lots of great photos, well-written and has done a ton of research on the cases he puts into his books. I am hoping to get to go to one of his lectures sometime and that he has another book coming out soon!

Adequate but Free elsewhere

I thoroughly enjoy Vachel Lindsay's poetry. The meter is reminisant of Edgar Allen Poe's verse. The subject matter is that of turn of the century (18th -19th) century. The mores and folkways of the United States were not the same as they are now. Lindsay gives you a cutting edge view of a mid-West American of that period.

There is no interactive Table of Contents. That means that you must trudge through the book from front to back or you must hunt-and-peck for pearls.

I frequently buy a book for a dollar on Amazon because it includes something like an interactive Table of Contents which the free version from other sources does not. This version on Amazon does not have anything that other independently produced versions have. Therefore I do not recommend paying money for it here. Currently this collection of poems is free on Amazon. By all means, get it here. If Amazon starts to charge for it, look a little further.

poetry for a lifetime

Vachel Lindsay's poetry has always evoked a memory of the first two decades of the twentieth century before WWI wrecked civilisation as it was then known. Imagine a poet who wrote poetry with the intention of it being set to music rather than just being read. Lindsay was a truly unique individual with an amazing talent that is under-appreciated. There is no finer poetry set to music than "Gen. William Booth Enters into Heaven, in the Charles Ives composition performed by the Gregg Smith Singers. My grandmother (b. 1900 once saw Lindsay perform, and I think it was the highlight of her life. She still recalled his performance clearly the summer before she died at age 92. The Gregg Smith LP of Ives' choral music which included "Booth" was the only LP she owned that wasn't by the Carter Family or Flatt & Scruggs. That's a high recommendation for Lindsay.

About the Author
Darrell Young (DigitalDarrell) is a professional nature photographer and an active member of Nikon Professional Services (NPS), Professional Photographers of America (PPA), and North American Nature Photographer's Association (NANPA). He's been an avid photographer since 1968 when his mother gave him a Brownie Hawkeye camera.

Darrell has used Nikon cameras and Nikkor lenses since 1980. He has an incurable case of Nikon Acquisition Syndrom (NAS) and delights in working with Nikon's newest digital cameras.
Living in the foothills of Great Smoky Mountains National Park has given him a real concern for natural environmental issues and a deep interest in nature photography.

He loves to write, as you can see in the Resources area of the Nikonians.org community. He joined the community in 2000 and his literary contributions led to an invitation to become Founding Member of the Nikonians Writers Guild.

A Must Have Book for Nikon D7000 Owners!

A long review from a tough critic!
First off, I am a new DSLR user. Back in my film days, I had a Nikon N90...I was ready to take the plung to digital after more than disappointing results with my photos from the World Equestrian Games the fall of 2010. A kind soul at one of the shows let me play with her Nikon D300s...it was that point I knew I was ready for a DSLR. After a month of research, I was convinced I 'needed' the D7000 that was set to release in November 2010...after more research (and reading lots of reviews) I made the purchase of my D7000 in August of 2011 (along with a large wish list that had grown over the months leading up to the DSLR purchase!)...

Mastering the D7000 is my third book purchase on the Nikon D7000. I also have the two books by David Busch (the field guide and the main book Nikon D7000 Guide to Digital SLR Photography). While these books are nice, and explain the users manual well, they only scratch the surface. Oh, I do not even know where to start on the awesomeness of Darrell Youngs 'Mastering the Nikon D7000'.

This book is hands down, the best of the best. Each section references the page(es) in the users manual which I really like. The book also sports a nice index and table of contents. Each section has a 'thumb-tab' (black edge and chapter number) so you can easily flip through the section. Almost every chapter has a full blank page for notes at the end of the chapter.

Darrell gives excellent in-depth explainations of EVERYTHING you could possibly want to know...digging into areas where the David Busch books skimmed over (the David Busch books briefly explained some of the advanced areas, but didn't give any in-depth explaination ---much less an example!). This book gives personal examples throughout the book and suggestions, even offering his setting for this item (and why he has it set this way).

The books has EXCELLENT photos of the menu paths. Other books have one big picture of the top level menu. This book has at least two and up to six (!), screenshots of the menu path on how to get to the setting and set it! Where there are multiple screenshots, they are placed horizonally across the screen and numbered to outline the flow (left to right as you would expect). I love this!!

The book is super nice...nice paper, nice color pictures and lots and lots of nice color screenshots of menus! Nice sized book - 479 pages and small enough to fit in your bag (although the page count does tend to make it a little heavy)

The book also uses color coding, numbering and italics/bold....Blue to refer to camera settings, green for functions and settings displayed on the cameras LCD screen, and italics for textual prompts seen on the cameras LCD screen. I LOVE this feature...it really helps the text 'pop' making the text an easy read. Darrell also uses outline features: numbering 1,2,3...bullets and alpha a,b,c....this also helps break up the text and makes the text easy to read.

I cannot express enough how much I love this book. I am a hardcore 'book person', and am VERY judgemental when it comes to books and what I like. When I purchase a book, binding, paper and format are important to me if I am going to read and reread the book...I don't want it to fall apart after light use.

Also, I signed up for Nikonian.org, I stumbled upon this site before this book came and was surprised to see forum posts answered by Darrell! This site is the office e-mag site for Nikon photographers....great site, sign up if you aren't already a memeber! This book also has a 50% off coupon for the Gold membership (I actually opted for the cheapy $25 option...you get it free for 30days when you sign up).

Buy this book! If you own/plan on owning a D7000, you NEED this book, or else you are going to be missing features the camera has, that other books neglect mentioning...or explaining how to set up and use! A 10-star book! The authors enthusiasm for the Nikon D7000 is clearly shown throughout the book :)

D7000 Complexities made Simple and Clear!

"Digital Darrell" Young has done it again. This author excels at taking complex subjects, and explaining them in a manner that makes them very easy to understand. In explaining the countless and complex features of this camera, I find the information to be short, sweet, and to the point. I have been using my D7000 for 8 months preceeding the publication of this book, yet on every page I am finding important facts that I was not at all aware of prior to reading this book. The insight of the day so far? -- The minimum ISO setting on a Nikon D7000. Sure, Auto ISO lets you set a max ISO, but it wasn't until reading this book that I was aware of a minimum ISO as well! Brilliant material in this book for sure.

After ten years of shooting photos with my previous camera I finally decided to upgrade to something more modern. In my browsing this was recommended as a companion product. After previewing the sample pages I decided it would be worthwhile................

And indeed it is......I have already learned so much from this book and I also joined the user group moderated by the author of this book. It is detailed and gives extensive photos to back up the print.

I would highly recommend this author to anyone with a Nikon camera.........there are numerous issues out...........so there is probably one keyed to your specific camera.

CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY: A CONTEMPORARY PERSPECTIVE, Third Edition is a sophisticated synthesis of social and cultural anthropology. Keesing was concerned with the political and ethical implications of anthropological fieldwork and was sensitive to the global conditions of inequality caused by the spread of capitalist relations of production. Thus, his book is more "political" than other introductory texts in the field. Keesing was also committed to the belief that students should not merely memorize terms and theories, but should also be challenged to ponder the deep questions raised by human diversity. Roger Keesing's untimely death in 1992 necessitated that a co-author execute his planned revision. Dr. Andrew Strathern was chosen because, like Keesing, his training is in the British social anthropological tradition, his fieldwork has concentrated on the Pacific, and his recent teaching experience has acquainted him with American cultural anthropology. In this revision, Dr. Strathern preserved Keesing's vision, arguments, and the ethnographies presented as illustrations of Keesing's theories, while also examining each sentence to determine whether its assertions needed to be updated, modified, or abandoned. Small changes made in this way incorporated a larger aim of updating and recasting the book to better fit and reflect a world 20 years since publication of the first edition.

Really boring

I love anthropology books, even text books, but this one is so dry and awful (until the last few chapters). I've never had to force myself to read a book before trying this one.

This novel is another masterful work by Coulter. This is the final novel in a series, telling a new story as well as visiting old ones. Saint reencounters a young girl from his past in Maui in an unlikely situation. He soon becomes her husband, but in name only. She loves him, but he sees himself as her protector and brother. They encounter many exciting trials in San Francisco. I promise you will be drawn into the story imediatedly.

Ahhhhh!!! this book was like coming home to old friends. I read all four of this series in three days. I just couldn't stop, and I hated to see it end. This book was sweetly romantic and tender. It was also filled with high adventure and an old west charm that touched my heart all the way to my soul. There were times I wanted to just shake poor Saint and say "Wake up man!! See what your missing!!" It was a truly wonderful story. I feel as if these people and old San Francisco are a permenant part of me. If you have never read Catherine Coulter books before, start with this series and read them all. You'll be an instant convert.

I was at home feeling lonely and unloved this book picked me up and I forgot about these little things and lost myself in the stirring plot as it untwisted. I would recommend this book to anyone if you`ve never read any previous "Coulters" do so now start with this one
