"Sisson and Grossman's, The Anatomy of The Domestic Animals",1975 is the last update of the original work done by Septimus Sisson; professor of Veterinary Anatomy at The Ohio State University that was done shortly after the Civil War. It was the first in depth treatise of veterinary anatomy published in the United States. The 5th edition published in 1975 was the last update of the book done by a student of Dr. Grossman, Dr. Richard Getty DVM, PhD. of Iowa State University Ames, IA. Dr Getty, ill at the time with cancer never saw the book published but along with the efforts of his foremost student Dr. Nani Ghoshal Dr Vetmed PhD., professor of Veterinary Anatomy,Iowa State University, plus others the last edition is true to the previous editions. It is an indepth study of domestic animal anatomy of the type that is found lacking in newer books of veterinary anatomy. Each chapter sets forth the anatomy of the animal in detail done by foremost anatomical expert of that animal at the time the book was published. This book is a must for the serious student of Veterinary Anatomy or Veterinary Surgery.

He met Art Berg, another quadriplegic, who introduced himself without a word but with plenty of action. And Chad was paying attention. That was the day he began to change his mind about his life s purpose. With desperation, dedication and determination, and the help and love of his family and friends, Chad set out to reinvent himself, take risks, and do things he never thought he could or would do, even when his body was whole and fully functional. He had plenty of black periods to work through, to let go of his old ideas about who he was supposed to be, and the anger and frustration of not being able to be that. It hasn t been an easy journey, but it has transformed him into a man unlike anything he ever thought he could or would be. He s dedicated his life to service for others who have lost functionality, or perhaps never had it. He became a living example of what is possible, if one is willing to invent different ways to do what has to be done. In order to teach others, he had to invent those new and different ways of doing things for himself. He had to walk the talk. Now... He opens minds, eyes, hearts and doors for people just like himself. He helps people who have all their faculties to become more than they think they can be. He inspires children and adults alike, those with challenges and those without. He helps companies to work better by coming together, and teaches families and caretakers new ways to help those they care for. In the ten years since his accident, Chad travels the world, speaking to companies, kids in schools at all grade levels, families and individuals whose lives are being remolded by their own events. He has become the living demonstration of what is possible, if we find different ways of doing what must be done. His life changed forever and now, he changes lives.

He is a member of the National Speakers Association and is a CSP (Certified Speaking Professional). A designation achieved by fewer than 8% in the speaking industry. He was most recently inducted into the Speaker Hall Of Fame. The past president of the National Speakers Association Utah chapter. Maintaining his hobby and dream of managing a 5100 acre elk preserve with his father, Kelly. He has raced in marathons, and in the summer of 2003, Chad set a world record by wheeling his chair from Salt Lake City to Las Vegas (513 miles). Participating in wheelchair athletic competition including basketball, rugby, wheelchair racing, and officiating basketball (a dream come true). Spending many hours with other injured individuals in therapy, encouraging them to overcome their challenges, focus on dreams and make them a reality, and to love life for all that it has to offer. Doing What Must Be Done

Chad, you have written a very inspirational Book, and I think it will have a very positive affect on my life. I suffered a life threatening accident, that has left me permanently disabled, but not nearly as serious as yours, but one that has left me feeling very helpless. It has been difficult for me to achieve a positive enough attitude to keep on going. Your attitude and ability to keep moving in a very positive direction are very encouraging. I appreciate the way that you mentioned your beliefs and religion, but never proselytized, which would have been a big turn-off for me. You were awfully open about your life and accident, along with your disabilities which is greatly appreciated, and must have been somewhat difficult to do. Thanks!

Great read from a great person

This is a very good book. One I would highly recommend. I have had the privilege of knowing Chad for seven years now and he has been an inspiration of mine. This book has given me a greater resolve of how to deal with my own challenges. My 12 year read the book as well and loved it.

Life-Affirming, Gut-Wrenching, Awe-Inspiring!

I have to admit, I carried Chad Hymas' book in my briefcase for a couple of months, always intending to read it during my travels, but didn't have the energy to crack it open fearing a somewhat depressing journey. I couldn't have been more wrong. What an inspiring journey Chad (and his loved-ones) took me on. Yes, his account of the accident that caused his paralysis was traumatic, but the story is not one of tragedy. It's not even really a tale of triumph at its core, but rather a witness to the creation of heroes.

To his credit, and to my surprise, Chad is not really the hero, though others may disagree. He makes it clear that the heroes were those around him: from the rescue team and hospital personnel, to his father, his mentor Art Berg, his brothers, rehab nurse and even his young kids. But most of all, the true hero of his story is his wife Shondell - his angel. As a reader, I couldn't help to put myself in his place wondering, hoping that my wife would have that level of strength, courage and love for me to be the hero that Shondell was for Chad. Very thought-provoking stuff. This book is a drama, a comedy, an inspiration tome as well as a book of life and business wisdom all wrapped in one. In a long list of achievements in Chad's life, writing this book is just one of a long string of victories hard won with many more yet to come. Loved it.

Sven Lindqvist, a traveler and historian, paints a broad-brush history of European colonialism, especially in Africa. Drawing his title from Joseph Conrad's fable Heart of Darkness, he turns up 19th-century newspaper accounts of British massacres of wounded Sudanese rebels after the siege of Omdurman, of German concentration camps in what was once called Southwest Africa, of a Belgian captain who decorated his flower beds with the heads of recalcitrant plantation workers. These incidents were not unusual, Lindqvist writes. Neither were they thought especially brutal by their perpetrators, for, he argues, colonialism was guided by a doctrine that placed Europe at the top of the evolutionary ladder and regarded non-Europeans as a separate species bound for extinction--a doctrine that found its ultimate expression in the Holocaust. This is an occasionally gruesome and always provocative study.

Disturbing and daring

Four stars because too short. Although going through some of the references at the end of the book would extend the amount of reading considerably. Disturbing because the description of atrocities is heartrending for someone who values life and does not cheer at bombs being dropped through the push of a button on children two continents away by functionaries in plush armchairs. Exterminating all the brutes is online, alive and well, thank you. Disturbing because what is described in the book is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of massacres and atrocities. History recorded comparatively few descriptions of atrocities by a few well-meaning souls. The rest lacked the required courage the author mentions, in particular, at the end of the book. The courage to behold the beam that is in thine own eye. Daring to mention "Genocide" in connection with pre-WWII massacres, although the author writes the appropriate lines to exonerate himself - did he lack courage in the face of overwhelming odds ? Genocide is ingrained in human nature, but the roots of "scientific" and "good" genocide as conducted by European nations in particular, and discussed in the book, run much deeper. The book could have gained by delving into them. The book is concise, to the point, without prose-padding. This is particularly refreshing. It is a very good read... if you have the courage.

This is a very good book. I read it in my anthropological theory course. It's thought provoking, interesting, and emotional all wrapped in a historical and informative package. I would recommend for both free reading and college classes. It does cover some intense topics though, so it's not a particularly "fun" book.

Incredibly powerful and relevant still

Exterminate All the Brutes is brief and disturbing; Sven Lindqvist unveils the realities and moral convictions we have almost completely repressed. Just as the author suggests, the book shatters the image we have of ourselves, but even more importantly, it is distressing how relevant his ideas and Conrad's `Heart of Darkness' are in the world today - again.

The title of the book is taken from Joseph Conrad's 1902 classic novel - Heart of Darkness. In it, the main character, Kurtz, goes to Africa to bring progress and culture to the uncivilized continent. He is dispatched to Africa as an ivory procurement agent, and as the story develops the reader is confronted with the unreal brutality of the colonial rule. Conrad's work intertwines the themes of `light of civilization' and `darkness of barbarism' and makes reader realize the hollowness of these phrases as Kurtz surrounds himself with chaos and mayhem. Sven Lindqvist develops this theme as he traces the imperial history of European colonialism and condenses it to a single sentence: "Exterminate all the brutes." European world expansion, he claims, and the employed tactics of extermination are the truths we like to forget. Preferring to externalize we look at the Holocaust as a historical aberration, a smear on the path of progress and enlightenment brought to the world by the Western societies. However, as the author points out, just as all of Europe contributed to the making of Kurtz, it would also be the European habits and political precedents that would lay the foundation for the atrocities of the Second World War. What was done in Africa, would be repeated in Europe - we know this, what we lack is the courage to face what we know and draw some conclusions.

The book culminates by pointing to the Holocaust, but one doesn't have to look far to see the same principles being applied in the world today; `Heart of Darkness' is applicable to every nation, culture and ideology. `Exterminate All the Brutes' is an incredibly powerful book.

About the Author
Michael Schaper�(BA, MComm, PhD) is an adjunct professor at Curtin BusinessSchool, Curtin University of Technology, Western Australia, and is also deputy chairman of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. Michael was previously dean of Murdoch Business School and head of the School of Business at Bond University, and held the foundation professorial chair in Entrepreneurship and Small Business at the University of Newcastle, Australia. He has extensive experience in the area of small business through his previous roles, which have included appointments as Small Business Commissioner for the Australian Capital Territory, and as President of the Small Enterprise Association of Australia and New Zealand. Before his academic career, Michael worked for several years as a professional small business adviser in Australia. In addition, he ran his own business and was involved in numerous other start-up projects. He holds a PhD and a Master of Commerce degree from Curtin University of Technology, as well as a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Western Australia. Michael is the author or co-author of eight books, all in the fi eld of business management, numerous journal articles and has been an occasional columnist for The Australian Financial Review , The Australian and Business Review Weekly .

Thierry Volery�is Professor of Entrepreneurship and Director of the Swiss Institute for Entrepreneurship and Small Business at the University of St Gallen, Switzerland. From September 1999 until 2002, he was Professor of Entrepreneurship and Management at EM Lyon Business School, France. He was previously a senior lecturer in Entrepreneurship and International Business at Curtin University of Technology in Perth, Western Australia. Thierry has been a visiting professor at the China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) in Shanghai and at the Graduate School of Management, University of Western Australia. He has served on several editorial boards, including the Journal of Small Business Management , the International Small Business Journal , the Journal of Enterprising Culture and the International Journal of Educational Management . He holds a doctorate in business economics and social sciences from the University of Fribourg, Switzerland. His research interests include the nature of entrepreneurial work, the health of entrepreneurs and innovation in small fi rms.

Dr Paull Weber�comes from a banking background, where he directly managed over 40 staff and a portfolio of high net-worth business owners. He began his academic ‘sea change’ in 2001, completing an Honours degree, a research Masters degree and his PhD in six years. He has taught management and marketing courses in small business management, entrepreneurship, marketing communications and marketing principles. His research activities have been concentrated in the areas of mature entrepreneurship, lifestyle entrepreneurship, small business success metrics, organisational commitment and intranet effectiveness.Paull has contributed several book chapters, journal articles and case studies in the disciplines of entrepreneurship and tourism. He is also the deputy chair of Business Foundations, a business incubator, advisory and training organisation that assists more than fi ve hundred businesses each year.

Dr Kate Lewis�is a senior lecturer in the School of Management, and a research associate of the New Zealand Centre for Small and Medium Enterprise Research, at the Wellington campus of Massey University, New Zealand. She is also an associate fellow of the New Zealand Work and Labour Market Institute (Auckland University of Technology) and a vice-president of the Small Enterprise Association of Australia and New Zealand. About the authors:

David Boddy is a Research Fellow in the Department of Management at the University of Glasgow. He teaches courses for experienced managers on the management issues raised by computer-based information systems, which is the focus of his research. He is the author of two other books: Management: An Introduction (2007); and Managing Projects: Building and Leading the Team (2002) both�published by�Pearson Education.

Albert Boonstra is an associate professor at the Faculty of Management and Organisation, University of Groningen, The Netherlands. His research focuses on the human and organisational issues of implementing and using information and communication technologies. He teaches IT-management-related courses, and consults in the management of information systems for profit and not-for-profit organisations.

Graham Kennedy works in the internal consultancy division of the Royal Bank of Scotland. He has over eighteen years experience as a manager of change initiatives in industries as varied as financial services and engineering. This has provided him with many insights into the opportunities – and problems – which new technologies present to users.

A Very Good Textbook

I use "Managing Information Systems: Strategy and Organisation, 3rd Edition" in my "Management of Information Technology" course as the required textbook. The book is an excellent example from the British school of textbooks: condensed, yet relevant and very well-written. Each chapter begins with a mini case with a set of questions at the end. Throughout the chapter, as the subject develops, case questions--sometimes along with new information about the case--reemerge to give the reader a chance to apply the subject matter to the opening case. This feature is invaluable form a pedagogical point of view because it relates the case directly to the subject matter at hand. I look forward to the 4th edition of the title since the material covered and reading lists are slightly outdated. More comprehensive coverage of Web 2.0 and social media and their impact on organizations and information systems is required.
