A marvelous design bible

This is one of those books that satisfies all my needs at once. I've given it 5 stars, but please multiply them by 5. There's absolutely nothing in this book that I can complain about. The only problem is that I bought a lot of other design books in the past; what am I going to do with them now?

First off, I am a very difficult customer. I look at a book from many different angles - especially books that are supposed to teach me something. I usually have a problem or two or more with most books. The cover and the content SEEM of value, but upon opening the book one realizes very quickly that it's just a waste of money. This book, however, explained to me in ONE text everything I ever had to research on the Internet. Then I had to sift through thousands and thousands of results, and this book narrows it down to personal favorites. That's okay - after having read the book written by a pro, it's just very obvious that his preferences and judgement are better than mine.
One of my favorite topics in the book was the discussion about color psychology and text. I've read plenty of books on these - they were all boring and the author explained nothing. In this book it was like having a face-to-face discussion. And, that's only ONE example.

In short: if you're looking for something comprehensive, that teaches you MORE than what it claims, and gives you resources to study, AND teaches you how to look at your own designs critically, then you've found the answer in this book. You can look at something else, but believe me, I've most probably bought them already, and they don't get close to what is offered in this comprehensive package.

Very well done -- the only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because I reserve that for stuff that's close to a religious experience. If you're looking for content-oriented discussion, you'd be better served by something like "Keeping Found Things Found", but if you're looking for layout/font/typography stuff, this is right on the money.

Easy to follow and learn from! I got this book because I had to for my college class, however, even if I wasn't mandatory this would be a book I would want to buy to learn about web design! It gets you started and knowledgeable about anything you need to know.

There may be better options.

In order to save the reader some time I have condensed the information contained in the twenty previous reviews to the bare essentials. For those of you who are taking the SOA/CAS Exam F/2, there are some things you should be aware of before you dedicate yourself to studying from this book.

1. The book is poorly written. Almost everyone, including me, agrees. The author does not have a way with words, he does not know how to motivate the material and he often chooses the most confusing and roundabout way of explaining the concepts (if he explains them at all). Furthermore, the notation can be quite confusing. He is not consistent with his variables.

2. The book focuses on theory. Expect to spend your time following proofs and derivations of formulas. The problem sets in the book focus on proofs and derivations. Have a firm grasp on Calc 1, Calc 2 and all the algebra that is entialed because Kellison will not spend the time to spell out his proofs and derivations step by step.

3. You need a supplement for working example problems. There are not enough computational problems in this book. Get a good manual that will prepare you specifically for the exams you are taking. Manuals will give you pointers about managing your time and can help you avoid common traps and pitfalls that arise during computations. I recommend getting an Atex or ASM manual. For instance, Harold Cherry's ASM Manual covers all of the topics found in Kellison, at greater depth, in the same order, and in plain english.

4. Many people have passed the exams using only manuals. Other's have passed using manuals and other texts such as "Schaum's Outline of Mathematics for Finance" or "Mathematics of Finance" by Cissell. Very few people pass without doing lots of practice problems

5. Others have passed the exam by using only this book. So it seems that this book is sufficient, but not necessary for preparing for the exam. Ultimately, you must be the judge. WHile it is certainly true that if you master this book you will be rewarded by a rich understanding of the theory of interest my personal recommendation for those studying for the exams is to devote most of your time and energy to practice problems. I would recommend using this book to flesh out your understanding as you go.

For philosophers

This book does not claim to be more than An Essay in the Philosophy of Music and addresses itself primarily to the question "What Is a Work?" I can see that this is a hot issue in early music, but in the last two centuries, I had thought that these matters had all been thrashed out by the Absurdists and copyright lawyers. Evidently, philosophers are still chewing on this question. Try, "Character indifference is a reflexive, symmetric, and transitive relation which, by obtaining, produces a class of character-indifferent inscriptions under the partition generated by this relation" (p.23). However, the arcane terminology of professional philosophers, particularly the post-modernists, can look like bafflegab to a layperson. Do you exist? Do I? Is there any such thing as Reality? Skipping over those, the author asks some tough questions, such as "How much liberty should the conductor be allowed in interpreting an orchestral score?" There are deep discussions here, but the author does not offer firm answers and I believe I've seen more concise answers in other books. If your interest is mainly in music history of the last two centuries, this will be slow going for a meager yield.

I really enjoyed it

I found this book to be thoroughly engrossing, exciting, and fascinating. I frequently get into all sorts of hand-waving strange arguments with people, about "musical works" (e.g. my pseudo-"composition"/appropriation work "Your Life Up To This Moment"), and in Lydia Goehr's book, I found a very useful framework for thinking clearly and critically about such things.

I absolutely loved this boxed set

I absolutely loved this boxed set. Star was such an interesting and likeable character I couldn't wait to keep reading about her exploits. Plus, the chemistry between her and Rick was explosive! The love scenes were incredibly sensual and the writing was absolutely beautiful. Can't wait to read more from this author.

Scorching Hot, Fearless, and Sensual - Fantastic!

As always Jayne Rylon is fearless and ambitious in her writing style. I loved this heroine so much I can't even put it into words. Her career as a prostitute isn't just a job to her, it's about helping individuals who need another human's touch. While that concept could come off clich� or awkward if written wrong; Ms. Rylon did a fantastic job of showing us Star's heart and soul, so that we really believed that she was in it for the right reasons. When she meets the man of her dreams, and finds herself in a difficult situation it doesn't come across as contrite. I felt every emotion, and Sweet Jesus I felt every orgasm! This series was SCORCHING hot, romantic, dramatic, and it is absolutely one of my favorite pieces of Jayne Rylon's work. Well done.

A surprise!

I was looking for something different to read and boy did I get it! I really enjoyed the relationship between Sarah and Rick. It was very intense and on a level that is quite rare! I would recommend this book to anyone that likes this genre. The only thing that I took a very small issue with was the ending. I felt it was a bit abrupt. I wanted just a bit more.

It brought constant flow of tears to my face,,

WARNING: The first part of amazon description about the book IS PLAIN WRONG. Mons Romero NEVER had any conversion to the poor after supporting the government! Roberto Morozzo explained this very well in this oustanding book! Amazon please FIX THIS!

I was one of His catechist in San Salvador. Member of the Persecuted Church. All my life since his murdered I have fought to give my Archbishop, now Beato Martir his proper place. He was not a political activist. He was an authentic Pastor. This book is inspired! All those times have come back to my mind while reading it and I can give before God, my personal witness is that what is written in it, is the truth on the life, mission and death of my so much loved Archbishop.
Totally recommended. Totally!!!!

Great new book on Monse�or Romero

I have read several books about Oscar Romero and this volume led me to a deeper understanding of him as a man, his views about liberation theology, his relationship with various popes and Vatican officials, the issue of his "conversion," his struggle with depression and so much more. Highly recommended
